Today’s Good News And Bad News

BAD NEWS FOR TRUMP
Another prominent Republican, Senator Susan Collins, flees. In her first interview explaining the decision, Collins, the senior senator from Maine, said she won’t support Hillary Clinton, whose policies she said would bankrupt the nation, but could vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson or write in a candidate. CRAZY PEOPLE OBJECT TO CALLING TRUMP CRAZY
Washington (CNN) Patrick Kennedy, a mental health advocate and former Rhode Island congressman, penned an op-ed Monday calling on Americans to stop calling Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “crazy” because it demeans those who suffer from real mental health issues. Kennedy, the youngest son of the longtime Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, writes in The Washington Post that the rhetoric surrounding the 2016 election discourages anyone suffering mental health issues from seeking help. Yes, it is demeaning to crazy people to be compared with Trump. They shouldn’t put up with it.
Although Trump made a major speech about his new tax plan, only a few details have emerged. He wants to have only 3 brackets of 12, 25%, and 33% but there is as yet no indication of what the limits of taxable incomes will be for each bracket. It would be a rude awakening for some middle class folks who were comfortably in the 15% bracket to wake up next April and find that they are now in the 25% bracket, just so millionaires can get another break. Trump also wants to eliminate Obamacare and the Estate Tax. The first and last of these are a definite giveaway to the very rich and the ultra-rich. Currently, the top income tax bracket is 39.6% so the government is expected to lose millions on each billionaire’s taxes, and trillions on the total of all of the really high income taxpayers.
Estate taxes are only paid on inheritances of over 10.9 million dollars per married couple, and range from 18% to a maximum of 40% of the amount over that threshold. So eliminating them will help almost no one except those that don’t need any help. It is hard to feel sorry for the poor schmuck that is inheriting say 12 million and having to pay 40 percent of the last one million, thereby only receiving 11.6 million or so, just for being hard working or smart enough to be born in the right bed. Of course, Trump’s own children from several wives and beds would be major beneficiaries of getting rid of the estate tax, saving themselves several billion and, of course, costing the less fortunate taxpayers an equal amount. Because of the exemption of the first 10.9 million, less than 0.2 % of all estates in the U.S. are ever taxed, and most of them only a little bit. That doesn’t seem like a problem that needs fixing, except in the minds of Trump’s billionaire donors – er, advisers. In fact, one of the main purposes of estate taxes is to break up very large estates, to prevent a few families from eventually ending up owning everything. Winston Churchill, no Liberal himself, argued that estate taxes are “a certain corrective against the development of a race of idle rich”
Altogether, economists say that Trump’s plan is expected to double the national debt. So, other than being a giveaway to the very wealthy, eliminating health care for those that need it and doubling the national debt, it sounds like a pretty good plan.
TRUMP FAILS TO INSULT IN MONDAY’S SPEECH
It looks like, at least for one day, Trump may have listened to his advisors, who have cautioned him that he is running out of people to insult. We don’t expect it to last though, because he will probably think of some other group to insult that no other politician ever has before. Pet owners? Vegans? Left-handed people? We’ll have to wait and find out.
Another email dump showed again that Hillary is just another lying politician, lying about her dealings with the Clinton foundation while she was S.O.S. This is getting annoying. If it weren’t for the fact that her opponent is an even bigger liar, she would be ruined. My god, Nixon and LBJ are starting to look like honest Abe compared to these two.
DID TRUMP ADVOCATE ASSASSINATING PRESIDENT HILLARY?
Hillary’s campaign thinks he did. Here’s what he said. “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks. Though Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.” Trump hasn’t figured out yet that saying things that sound outrageous cuts both ways – it certainly gets him lots of free media attention but also makes lots of people think he is unfit, unhinged, dangerous or maybe all three. Whether he did or not, put this one on the pile of dung that is weighing Trump down.
WILL TRUMP DEBATE?
After Hillary accepted the invitation to the debates, Trump agreed, BUT only if he can select the moderators. We suspect that he doesn’t want any women moderators who may have blood coming out of their “whatever”. Maybe he will only accept his Fox News buddies like Hannity and O’Really. The non-partisan commission that runs the debates is very unlikely to agree to his demands, so we will see if this is the excuse he thinks he needs to back out.
A NEW KIND OF OIL RIG
State Attorneys General try to investigate Exxon but congressional Republicans ride to the rescue, trying to shut down the investigation. Will this become a campaign issue? Sure, anything can be and this one is tailor-made for senate and house races. [MORE]
TODAY’S MEANINGLESS POLLS
These include all the big swing states, so almost all of both candidates’ money and time will be spent on them. They will determine the election.
