Today’s Good News And Bad News
From Our Local Political Junkie We’ll Call “Cincy Dave”
GOOD NEWS FOR HILLARY
The Cincinnati Enquirer, A.K.A. “The Fishwrap,” has endorsed Hillary. The Enquirer has been a solidly Republican newspaper since the invention of the printing press, and hasn’t endorsed a Democrat for at least 100 years, endorsing such candidates as Hoover in the middle of the Great Depression and all the other opponents of FDR – Alf Landon, Wendell Willkie, and Thomas Dewey – so this is a huge departure for them. They summarized their endorsing editorial by stating: “Hillary Clinton has her faults, certainly, but she has spent a lifetime working to improve the lives of Americans both inside and outside of Washington. It’s time to elect the first female U.S. president – not because she’s a woman, but because she’s hands-down the most qualified choice.” Will this make much difference? – probably not, because not many people read newspapers anymore, unless they are crossword addicts. The Enquirer has one of the easiest crosswords on earth, too easy for most people, but maybe Hillary can pick up a couple of votes among the dumbed-down crossword fans.
MORE GOOD NEWS FOR HILLARY
15,000 emails are supposed to be made public but a federal judge has decided that only 1000 need be released before Election Day. The Republicans in Congress have already gone over them, as well as the FBI, so there isn’t anything important in them anyway, although making them public would keep the email issue alive, as amateur muckrakers would try to find ulterior meanings to everything. The slowdown is caused by the State Department lawyers sifting through every one, with probably a lot of foot-dragging, as Trump isn’t well thought of at the Department.
GOOD NEWS FOR TRUMP
Cruz flip-flops and endorses Trump. After saying that he could not endorse Trump because of what Trump said about his wife, backstabbing Ted Cruz did just that. It must have been the pressure from big shot Republicans and especially the threat from RNC Chairman, Reince Priebus, to retaliate against any Republican that failed to support the party’s nominee. Trump had also claimed that Cruz’s father was somehow involved in the JFK assassination. Trump himself, upon hearing that Cruz finally endorsed him, did his own flip flop. He had previously said that if Cruz ever endorsed him, he would not accept it, but accept it he did, – immediately. Altogether, the whole thing was a strange double flip-flop in a strange election season. Although Cruz’s endorsement is generally viewed as good for Trump, it may not be good for Cruz. Some Cruz supporters thought his stance in not supporting the Donald was because of principle, but now many realize that, like most politicians, his only principles are getting and keeping power. It has nothing to do with party unity and everything to do with Cruz’s plans for 2020.
BAD NEWS FOR TRUMP
Carter Page, a top Trump advisor, is being investigated by U.S. Intelligence for his ties to Russia. It has been alleged that he is making backroom promises to the Kremlin to lift economic sanctions against Russia if Trump is elected. This has the potential to become a big scandal because there is already evidence that Russia is trying to influence the U.S. election in favor of Trump. It also comes on the heels of known ties to Russia by Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and Trump advisor, former general Michael Flynn, who has a close relationship with Putin and the cable TV channel RT (Russia Today), which is wholly owned and controlled by the Kremlin. TRUMP STARTED WITH NOTHING
If you believe that one, we have a bridge to Hawaii to sell you, but, amazingly, one of the Little Trumps apparently does. Eric Trump, the candidate’s son, went on Fox News and told everyone that his father had “gone from just about nothing to” being, well, a successful real estate whatever. Apparently, getting a million dollar loan from his father in the ‘60s (equal to 10 million today) and many subsequent, much larger loans and loan guarantees from his father and then inheriting a couple of hundred million from his father is “just about nothing.” One has to wonder what little Eric Trump thinks getting a good head start would consist of. Maybe inheriting Bill Gates’ entire $60 or $70 Billion share of Microsoft? It looks like the baby Trumps are even more out of touch than The Donald. Even the gullible Fox Viewers might have a hard time swallowing this ET story.
TODAY’S MEANINGLESS POLLS
Hillary was twice the popular First Lady of Arkansas, and while there she worked on children’s health, education and children’s legal issues. But that doesn’t seem to be helping her now in this solidly Confederate State. The 24 years since she left is a very long time and it’s all about “what have you done for me lately?” Arkansas is a lost cause for her and she won’t waste any time going back to her old home to campaign.
