Ohio’s Eighth District Republican Congressman Warren Davidson says

On February 3, a Norfolk Southern train transporting hazardous materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. The resulting crash spilled nine train cars full of toxic chemicals into the soil, water, and air. Five rail cars carrying vinyl chloride were intentionally burned, which prompted a temporary evacuation of the area. The surrounding area continues to be monitored and tested for toxic substances. Many Ohioans and Pennsylvanians are affected by this unfortunate accident. I am deeply concerned about the current and long-term health of the residents of East Palestine and the broader region. There must be a stronger federal response from the Biden administration. On Saturday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) agreed to send resources to East Palestine. However, this only occurred after my colleagues and I in the Ohio Congressional delegation sent a letter to FEMA, urging them to assist the people of East Palestine. Moreover, FEMA still has not declared a disaster, which would enable it to provide even more assistance.
This incident not only adds to concerns that rail companies need more accountability but also strengthens the need for Congressional scrutiny. Additionally, federal assistance to East Palestine should not have arrived two weeks after the disaster occurred. We need better leadership from FEMA, the Department of Transportation, and the White House.

Fighting the National Crime Wave
Soft-on-crime policies have predictably resulted in a nationwide surge in violent crime. Prosecutors in certain districts may downgrade crimes or stop prosecuting criminals altogether. Places like New York are refusing to detain dangerous criminals before their trials. Defending our communities means getting criminals off our streets, and supporting victims over criminals should be our priority.
This week, I met with Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers. She shared with me her commitment to protecting public safety and the critical work local police do investigating and securing convictions. However, even after convictions, some judges refuse to hold criminals accountable and release them despite their ongoing threat to the community. Ohio judges cannot afford to adopt soft-on-crime policies that are failing around the country.

Government scientists and government funded researchers have so far been less-than-forthcoming about their knowledge and actions, including work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology and potential pandemic pathogens. We can’t accept more years of stonewalling; the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic is committed to conducting the kind of proper investigation that the American people have demanded.
