Today’s Good News And Bad News
From Our Local Political Junkie We’ll Call “Cincy Dave”
BAD NEWS FOR TRUMP
For Trump, charity begins and ends at home. Today we have a big story about The Donald using his fake charity’s money to settle legal problems in his business dealings. The Washington Post has a long article detailing how he spent $258,000 in money everyone else gave to the Trump Foundation to pay debts and legal obligations for his businesses. Trump had not contributed a dime himself to the “charity” in many years but instead used the funds in it for his own benefit, which is a federal crime. It is hard to see how he can claim that this is just some kind of bookkeeping error because he is the only person in charge of anything with regard to the Trump Foundation and he signed the checks from the Foundation himself. This is worth a read for anyone who gives anything to charity, but especially a charity entirely controlled by one person. (More Here)
TRUMP: “THERE’S NOTHING LIKE DOING THINGS WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY”
Yesterday, the same day that the above article came out, Trump made a speech in North Carolina where he celebrated the idea of using OPM – Other People’s Money to do what he wants to do. The irony was not lost on reporters, even if it was on supporters.
TRUMP – HOLT “FAIR”
The Donald says Lester Holt will be fair as moderator of the first debate, even though he is a Democrat. – In a interview with his buddy, Bill O’Reilly, he accused people supporting
Hillary of trying to “game the system” and complained that everything is rigged. Not that he himself would ever try to use any system to his advantage. Holt is not a Democrat – he is a registered Republican, although Donald probably assumes that he is a Democrat because of his rather dark complexion.
TRUMP DISPARAGES BLACK COMMUNITIES
Trump has repeated his claims that black communities are worse off than they have ever been, “ever, ever, ever,” while speaking to nearly all-white audiences, who all naturally nod their agreement. President Obama took issue with this characterization, stating, “You may have heard Hillary’s opponent in this election say that there’s never been a worse time to be a black person. I mean, he missed that whole civics lesson about slavery or Jim Crow,” Obama said. “But we’ve got a museum for him to visit, so he can tune in. We will educate him.”
TERRORISM DOESN’T HELP TRUMP
It is widely assumed that Trump’s campaign benefits from terrorism, but an article in Slate disputes this. Statistics before and after recent attacks show little difference in support for Trump’s ideas, and Trump’s proposals to combat terrorism are a turn-off to many.
BAD NEWS FOR ALL POLITICIANS
The New York Times will start calling a lie a lie. On Wednesday, executive editor Dean Baquet confirmed that this is the case, saying, I think our investigative work—see the [Sept. 17] story on Trump’s tax breaks—has always been hard hitting. But we have decided to be more direct in calling things out when a candidate actually lies. The birther issue represents, well, outright lying. And he lied over a long period. It is a real word and we will use it when warranted.
TODAY’S MEANINGLESS POLLS
Not much to see here. We still don’t know why anyone would waste time or money polling New York and California. It would take an Abe Lincoln for a Republican other than a former governor to win California and, to state the obvious, Trump is no Abe.
