Today We Honor Officer Jose Chavez, shot when he approached a car during a traffic stop near a convenience store in the small village of Hatch, New Mexico

The three suspects fled the scene after the shooting and drove to a rest area where they shot another person during a carjacking, according to Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Chavez died as a result of his injuries. He had been with the department for two years.

“Tonight, Officer Chavez is an officer of every department; we all feel the tremendous loss for his family and for our community,” Kelly Jameson, a department spokeswoman said.

All three suspects have been taken into police custody, and Jesse Hanes, 36, wanted for aggravated murder in Ohio, has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Officer Chavez.
