image005Today We Honor Katie Barnes, The Deerfield Township Deputy Shot During A Domestic Violence Call Thursday Night

Sheriff Larry Sims says Deputy Barnes, responded to a domestic violence call at the Orchard of Landen apartments near the Kroger on Montgomery Road. As Barnes approached the apartment, Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui, 19, was waiting on the top of the stairs with an AK-47 rifle. He fired, striking Barnes in the stomach, Sims said. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office found six rounds near where Barnes was shot.

Barnes returned fire four times, radioed for assistance and was helped out of danger by a fellow deputy. Barnes, an All-American soccer athlete and West Virginia University Sports Hall of Famer, probably avoided more serious injury because of her All-American athleticism, Sheriff Sims said.

News reports say Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui, 19, was taken custody at about 4:30 a.m. after he returned to the complex in Deerfield Township. What kind of name is “Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui” anyway? Could it have been “Muslim?” For some strange reason, The Fishwrap forgot to mention it.
