From Our Local Political Junkie We’ll Call “Cincy Dave”

TRUMP’S MEXICO VISIT
image023The big news from yesterday was, of course, Trump’s visit to Mexico to meet with president Nieto.   Mexicans were outraged at his visit and Nieto was lambasted by the Mexican Media for even meeting with Trump.   When he got back. The first thing everyone wanted to know was whether Mexico would pay for Trump’s wall.   He told reporters that they hadn’t discussed who would pay for the wall.  Not true, said the president – he had told him right away that Mexico was not paying for any wall.  So one of them is lying.  We don’t know for sure which one, but we have a good idea.   President Nieto also said that he reminded Trump that more people had migrated to Mexico from the U.S. in the last couple of years than had entered the U.S. from Mexico.

image024Upon his return, Trump made his scheduled speech on immigration in Phoenix.  He began by expressing his “tremendous feeling for Mexican-Americans,” and then offering a litany of ways in which undocumented immigrants are ruining America.  “You can call it deported if you want. The press doesn’t like that term. You can call it whatever the hell you want. They’re gone,” Trump declared.  He also said, “Mexico will pay for the wall! 100%!  They don’t know it yet, but they’re going to pay for the wall.”   Additionally, he said that he would hire a huge number of new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who would be tasked with deportation. The ICE agents are a new detail, as is Trump’s tacit acknowledgement that the deportations would take years, rather image021than happening overnight.   So, basically, he’s back where he started at the beginning of his campaign. So much for “softening.”  Most Trump supporters are happy with the newest flip flop.   He has flipped and flopped so much on immigration in the last 2 weeks that the number of positions he held for a few days, hours or minutes is hard to keep track of, so at least this one is easy to remember.   Ann Coulter was ecstatic, saying “I hear Churchill had a nice turn of phrase, but Trump’s immigration speech is the most magnificent speech ever given.”  Others disagreed with her, saying, “If the Trump campaign should last a thousand years, this was not their finest hour.”  David Duke was equally pleased though, tweeting – “Excellent speech by Donald Trump tonight. Deport criminal aliens, end catch and release, enforce immigration laws & America First”.   Meanwhile, several of Trump’s Latino advisors quit. The Hillary campaign was almost

as exuberant and distributed the flattering remarks from Duke and Coulter.  They apparently think the speech was a winner too.

TRUMP SUPPORTERS SUPPORT WALL
A new Public Policy survey showed that 31 percent of Trump supporters are in favor of building a wall   –   An Atlantic Ocean Wall – to keep Muslims out.   Trump said he loves the poorly educated and he really meant it. Apparently, they love him too. This sounds like one of Jay Leno’s Jaywalking surveys.

FAKE PHOTO CONTROVERSY
Mark Burns, Trump supporter and adviser, the creator of a racist cartoon that made image004news this week, also tweeted this fake photo of Bill and Hillary in blackface.  The photo is supposed to be of them at a costume party and it has been around for a while.   However, it isn’t Bill and Hillary, but Burns fell for it anyway.  Burns is heading up Trump’s minority outreach effort.   Someone should tell him about the various fact-checking websites that exist.

GOOD NEWS FOR HILLARY
The Supreme Court tossed out most of NC Voter ID law.  The law had been specifically drawn to exclude as many black voters as possible.  According to court documents, the legislature had done studies on which racial groups each provision was most likely to affect before drawing up the new law, which   allowed only drivers licenses and did not allow other forms of photo ID that students and black voters may be more likely to have.  The law would have also cut the number of days of early voting, something that poor people need because they can’t take off work to vote.  These types of laws have been passed in many states with Republican legislatures so that politicians can pick the voters, rather than vice-versa.
