Today’s Good News And Bad News

From Our Local Political Junkie We’ll Call “Cincy Dave”

BAD NEWS AND MORE BAD NEWS

It is all bad news for Trump today and indeed for the last couple of weeks.  Every news story has been about how poorly the campaign is going, whether it is because of the polls, campaign disorganization, and party members abandoning him or his own outrageous statements.  It’s been all downhill since his convention.  In retrospect, his convention was pretty much of a bust too although it delivered a small bump in his polls that lasted only until the other convention a few days later.  He has even taken to lying about that, claiming that his convention outdrew Hillary’s convention, when it did not, except for the final night.  Is this a vast left-wing media conspiracy or just that his message resonates with fewer voters?   He seems tired and probably wishes it would be over soon.  So too do a lot of other people. The only things we have to look forward to are the debates, if indeed they really take place.

What would ordinarily be a lot of bad news for Hillary is getting overshadowed and overlooked because Trump grabs all the headlines and other media attention.   Hillary is effectively getting a pass on whatever revelations are in the latest email dumps from Russia.   Surely, there are some bad things in there that need explaining but she doesn’t even have to explain.   In a normal campaign, questions would be asked and answers would be given, but all the attention is on Trump’s latest bizarre statements.  Laughing about crazy statements from Trump and the lies from both candidates is a lot more fun than debating issues, that’s for sure.

TRUMP THREATENS NYT

After the New York Times published a story about the disarray in his campaign, The Donald went on the warpath against them, calling them “a paper of fiction.”  In a speech in Connecticut, he said they were “going to hell.”   Then he threatened to revoke their press credentials to his events.    He has already done this to the Washington Post, the National Review (a conservative magazine founded by Wm. F. Buckley) and several other media outlets.   Not even Richard Nixon, who hated the press, would think to deny them the right to cover campaign events but The Donald is certainly no ordinary politician.    And speaking of Connecticut, what in hell is he doing there anyway?  Connecticut is extremely unlikely to vote for a Republican, so he is just wasting his time.   It is just more evidence that NYT was right – the campaign doesn’t know what they are doing.  You won’t see Hillary wasting time campaigning in Oklahoma or Alabama.   As anyone who has a clue about politics knows, the single most precious commodity in a presidential campaign is the candidate’s time, and the Trump campaign is squandering it in places like Connecticut.

OBAMA STARTED THE AFGHANISTAN WAR

Well, that’s what Trump’s campaign staffer and spokesperson Katrina Pierson says.   After blaming Obama and Hillary last week for the 2004 death of Captain Khan in Afghanistan, she is now claiming that Obama started the Afghanistan war, which, of course, began in 2001 as an aftermath of 9/11.   Obviously, both of these events occurred when Obama was someone that nobody outside of (and few people inside of) Illinois had ever heard of, much less being able to start wars and get people killed in them.   Added to last week’s claim by DJT that Obama and Hillary co-founded ISIS (c.1999), it makes you wonder if anyone in the campaign has ever heard of “the Google machine.”   We do know that they know a little bit about “the internets” because DJT uses Twitter almost constantly.  Maybe they can get some additional IT help from the guy who set up Hillary’s server.  He could be looking for a job in that field.

SHE’S BAAAACK!

Yes, just like a bad penny, the Wicked Witch of the West (or East) is back.  We’re talking about Liz Cheney, who is running for the at-large House seat in Wyoming once held by her father.  A couple of years ago, she tried to challenge a sitting senator in that state and quickly crashed and burned, mostly due to the fact that she had never lived in Wyoming and her only “qualification” was that she was the daughter of the very popular (last approval rating = 9%), former Vice President, the aptly named, “Dick” Cheney.   Other than being female, she is a clone of her father, with looks and personality to match.  “So?”    Is that a problem to her getting elected?   Probably not, if she can secure the Republican nomination, which is tantamount to election.   Despite the facts that her real name is Elizabeth Perry and she never lived in Wyoming, she is leading in the polls.  As everyone knows, carpet-bagging is only a crime when the other side does it.

RANSOM FOR HOSTAGES

During the current controversy over the supposed “ransom for hostages”, where the Obama Administration turned over 400 million Dollars of their own money to Iran, Fox News trotted out none other than Oliver North to decry “ransom”.   You may remember Ollie, who was convicted of lying to congress, but later got off on a technicality, and who was a major figure in the Iran-Contra affair, that little operation run out of the Reagan White House.   As we recall it, Ollie, with Reagan’s approval, not only paid Iran ransom for hostages but also supplied them with arms as part of the deal.   It is also believed that the 1980 Reagan campaign negotiated with Iran to hold 66 hostages until after the election to insure his winning.  It was no coincidence that those hostages were released on the day of Reagan’s inauguration.   Reagan later avoided impeachment over the Iran-Contra affair by claiming he didn’t remember anything about anything.  Yes, Oliver North knows a lot about ransom for hostages and negotiating with Iran but he should be the last person to criticize the president on this subject.   Next week, Fox News is expected to have Donald Segretti disparaging dirty tricks and G. Gordon Liddy bemoaning burglaries.
